How to use stacks with Dropbox Dash
This article describes features available to all Dropbox Dash customers.
Stacks allow you to organize and collaborate on all types of content, including files, apps, and browser links, in one place and share them instantly both inside and outside of your team.
How to create a stack
You can create stacks on dash.ai, by using the desktop app, or through the browser extension.
To create a stack on dash.ai:
- Log in to dash.ai.
- Click Create stack in the left sidebar.
- Name your stack.
- Add a description, if you’d like.
- Click
(stack) above the name of your stack to add an emoji avatar if you’d like.
- Click ☑ (settings) and pick a color under Stack theme to change the background color of your stack.
- Click ☑ Add to stack in the top right.
- Copy and paste the link you’d like to add to your stack, or search for specific items you’d like to add.
- Click ☑ (add).
Note: You can also duplicate or archive a stack by clicking (more options), then Duplicate stack or Archive stack. You can find archived stacks in the Archived tab on the stacks page.
To create a stack on the Dash desktop app:
- Open the Dash desktop app by pressing control-e (Windows) or command-e (macOS).
- Click ☑ (add) in the left sidebar.
- Name your stack.
- Add a description, if you’d like.
- Click
(stack) above the name of your stack to add an emoji avatar if you’d like.
- Click ☑ (settings) and pick a color under Stack theme to change the background color of your stack.
- Click Add to stack in the top right.
- Paste a link by clicking ☑ (link) or search for a file or link by clicking ☑ (search).
You’ll see a pop up notifying you that a new stack item has been added.
To create a stack with the Dash browser extension:
- Open a browser tab.
- Click ☑ (Dash) to the right of your browser address bar.
- If you don’t see ☑ (Dash), click 🗀 (extensions), then click Dropbox Dash.
- Click ☑ New stack.
- Name your stack.
- You can also add additional items to your new stack by clicking 🗀 Click to add another item.
- Click Create.
This will add the page you currently have open to the new stack.
Tip: Once you create a stack, you can pin it by clicking (more options), then
Pin stack to make it easier to access. Pinned stacks will appear at the top of your start page, as well as at the top of the stacks page. You can also reorder pinned stacks by dragging and dropping them to your preferred order.
How to organize your stacks with sections
You can organize the items in individual stacks by using sections to group related content.
To add a section to a stack on dash.ai:
- Log in to dash.ai.
- Click
Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to add a section to.
- Click ☑ Create section on the right side of your screen.
- Enter a name for your section and click ☑ (checkmark).
- Add items into the section by dragging and dropping them from your stack.
You can remove or rename sections by clicking ☑ (more options) next to the section, then selecting ☑ Remove section or ☑ Rename section. You can also rearrange items within the stack or section by dragging and dropping them into the order you’d like them.
To add a section to a stack on the Dash desktop app:
- Open the Dash desktop app by pressing control-e (Windows) or command-e (macOS).
- Click
Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like add a section to.
- Click ☑ Create section.
- Enter a name for your section and click ☑ (checkmark).
- Add items into the section by dragging and dropping them from your stack.
You can remove or rename sections by clicking ☑ (more options) next to the section, then selecting ☑ Remove section or ☑ Rename section.
To add an item to a section using the Dash browser extension:
- Visit the page you’d like to add to a stack on your web browser.
- Click the puzzle piece icon to the right of your browser’s address bar.
- Click the Dropbox Dash icon
- Click
Add to stack in the top left corner.
- Click ☑ Add to section next to the stack you’d like to add the item to.
- Select the section you’d like to add the item to.
The item will now be in the section you’ve selected.
Note: You can also add items to your stack from the Recommended section by clicking
(add) next to the suggested item.
How to add an item directly to a section
You can add items directly into sections without needing to add them to a stack first.
To add a new item directly to a section on dash.ai:
- Log in to dash.ai.
- Click
Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to add an item to.
- Click Add to stack in the top right.
- Search for a file or paste a link in the search bar.
- Click ☑ Add to section next to the search result or pasted link.
- Select the section you’d like to add the item to.
The item will now be added to that section of your chosen stack.
To add a new item directly to a section on the Dash desktop app:
- Open the Dash desktop app by pressing control-e (Windows) or command-e (macOS).
- Click
Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to add an item to.
- Click Add to stack in the top right.
- Search for a file or paste a link in the search bar.
- Click ☑ Add to section next to the search result or pasted link.
- Select the section you’d like to add the item to.
The item will now be added to that section of your chosen stack.
To add a new item directly to a section using the Dash browser extension:
- Visit the page you’d like to add to a stack on your web browser.
- Click the puzzle piece icon to the right of your browser’s address bar.
- Click the Dropbox Dash icon.
- Click
Add to stack in the top left corner.
- Click ☑ Add to section next to the stack you’d like to add the item to.
- Select the section you’d like to add the item to.
The item will now be in the section you’ve selected.
How to summarize and ask questions about stacks
You can quickly generate insights, ask questions, and create summaries of the information in your stacks.
You can find answers to questions about items in your stacks, such as key takeaways from documents or clarifications on complex or difficult topics and terms. To ask a question about one of your stacks:
- Log in to dash.ai.
- Click ☑ Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to ask a question about.
- Click ✗ Chat below the name of your stack.
- You can also select one of the suggested questions under Try asking in the panel on the right.
- Enter your question in the text box and click
(send).
Once your answer appears, you can ask follow-up questions by entering your query in the text box labelled Ask a follow-up and clicking (send).
To summarize or ask a question about a specific item in your stack:
- Log in to dash.ai.
- Click 🗀 Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack that contains the item you’d like to summarize or ask a question about.
- Click ✗ (summarize and ask) next to the item.
A panel will open on the right of your screen with a summary of the item. From here you can click one of the Related questions to learn more about the item, or ask your own question by clicking Ask new question.

Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to ask a question about.
- Select the stack you’d like to ask a question about.
- Click ✗ Chat below the name of your stack.
- You can also select one of the suggested questions under Try asking in the panel on the right.
- Enter your question in the text box and click
(send).
Once your answer appears, you can ask follow-up questions by entering your query in the text box labelled Ask a follow-up and clicking (send).

A panel will open on the right of your screen with a summary of the item. From here you can click one of the Related questions to learn more about the item, or ask your own question by clicking Ask new question.
Note: This feature uses third-party generative AI to create content. Your data is never used to train their internal models, and is deleted from third-party servers within 30 days. Learn more about Dropbox AI and your privacy.
How to share stacks
You can share your stacks both inside and outside your organization. You can do so by adding people directly through their email, or by copying a link to the stack and pasting it where you’d like to share the stack.
To add people to a stack on dash.ai:
- Log in to dash.ai.
- Click
Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to share.
- Click Share.
- Click ☑ (search) and enter the person’s name or email address.
- Note: You can copy and paste a list of email addresses into the search bar to share a stack with multiple people at once.
- Add a note, if desired.
- Click Share.
To add people to a stack on the Dash desktop app:
- Open the Dash desktop app by pressing control-e (Windows) or command-e (macOS).
- Click
Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to share
- Click Share.
- Click ☑ (search) and enter the person’s name or email address.
- Note: You can copy and paste a list of email addresses into the search bar to share a stack with multiple people at once.
- Add a note, if desired.
- Click Share.
To create a link on dash.ai:
- Log in to dash.ai.
- Click
Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to share.
- Click Share.
- Select your link privacy settings from the dropdown on the left.
- Click ☑ Copy link.
To create a link on the Dash desktop app:
- Open the Dash desktop app by pressing control-e (Windows) or command-e (macOS).
- Click
Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to share
- Click Share.
- Select your link privacy settings from the dropdown:
- Anyone with the link
- Anyone at your company
- Only those invited
- Select the permissions you’d like invited users to have:
- Can edit
- Can view
- Click ☑ Copy link.
To edit stack permissions on dash.ai:
- Log in to dash.ai.
- Click
Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to edit.
- Click Share.
- Click Can view or Can edit next to the person whose permissions you’d like to edit.
- Select ☑ Can edit, Can view, or Remove as needed.
To edit stack permissions on the Dash desktop app:
- Open the Dash desktop app by pressing control-e (Windows) or command-e (macOS).
- Click
Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to share
- Click Share.
- Select your link privacy settings from the dropdown on the left.
- Click ☑ Copy link
How to comment on stacks
If you can edit a stack, you can leave a comment on any item that’s part of that stack, to add context or direct other team members to specific items.
Notes:
- Comments are visible to any logged in user who can view the stack, even if the viewer doesn’t have access to the item the comment is attached to.
- Each item in a stack can only have one comment.
- Comments on stacks can be a maximum of 2,000 characters.
- Log in to dash.ai..
- Click ☑ Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to add a comment to.
- Hover over the item you’d like to add a comment to.
- Click ✗ (comment) next to the name of the item.
- Enter your comment, then click Post.
- Open the Dash desktop app by pressing control-e (Windows) or command-e (macOS).
- Click ☑ Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to add a comment to.
- Hover over the item you’d like to add a comment to.
- Click 🗀 (comment) next to the name of the item.
- Enter your comment, then click Post.
Note: Only the author of a comment, or the owner of the stack, can delete comments.
Members of the stack will be notified by email whenever a comment is left on an item in the stack.
To turn notifications for stack comments on or off:
- Log in to dash.ai.
- Click ☑ Stacks in the left sidebar.
- Select the stack you’d like to toggle notifications for.
- Click ☑ (settings) next to the name of the stack.
- Click Turn on notifications or Turn off notifications as required.
Note: If you turn off notifications, you won’t receive them for comments, new items, or new members being added to the stack
